A Photo Essay

British Columbia’s Sea to Sky Highway climbs from misty shore to lofty peak, plenty of green between.

THE RISE

At the border, US Highway 99 magically becomes Canada’s Sea to Sky Highway. (The hero image shows the road from Quercus Viewpoint in Murrin Provincial Park.) This route crosses two distinct ecologies, from rainy coastal forests to alpine heights.

THE DRIVE

The highway’s most-famed stretch leaves Vancouver and traces Howe Sound through the outdoorsy town of Squamish before shooting north into the mountains. While Whistler is the go-to destination, 99 continues deep into the province’s interior.

WATERY WORLDS

The Sea to Sky shows off British Columbia’s watersculpted landscapes, from coastal views near Vancouver to Wonderland Lake and Shannon Falls. Winter storm-watching trips are increasingly popular.
