Maine's Historic Forts
For history enthusiasts, autumn makes an inviting moment for a wide-ranging tour of Maine’s military forts, some of the Northeast’s best-preserved fortifications. Each is an entrée into fascinating and little-known heritage. Fort Kent Blockhouse, at the state’s far northern reach, dates to 1830s boundary disputes. Fort Point State Park, on Penobscot Bay, preserves a 1750s installation created to defend British claims against the French. Fort Knox’s granite stronghold dates to mid-19th Century military concerns. At Fort Baldwin, southerly near Portland, hulking structures speak of a much different moment; construction on these batteries began in 1905. Fort Popham, itself built in 1861, stands on the site of much earlier fortifications.
