From Boston to Burlington: A journey across New England crosses many landscapes to reveal a region’s autumnal glory.

BOSTON, MA

There’s something in the American soul that’s drawn to Boston in the fall. There are few better beginnings to an autumn outing than a walk across the Common, the air crisp, the trees blazing. Pop around the corner to gather coffee from George Howell and a read for the knapsack at Brattle Book Shop, and you are prepared for all dimensions of a New England adventure.

What to wear: KontrolTM Denim, featuring temperature regulating fibers to cool when warm and warm when cold.

GLOUCESTER, MA

The nation’s oldest fishing port maintains the rugged charisma of a blue-collar town, but its Atlantic coast lends it a wild edge. Good Harbor and Niles Beach are a couple local favorites for salt-air immersion, and Halibut Point State Park to the north is the literal end of the road, a granite ledge with views all the way to Maine (at times). A crock of chowder at Gloucester House may feel necessary.

What to wear: Stretch VoyagrTM Jacket, combining premium breathability with advanced waterproof performance.

PORTSMOUTH, NH

The New Hampshire coast, state by state, is the nation’s shortest. Also, for our money, one of the most underrated. The surf breaks at Rye Beach start firing for real as autumn rolls toward winter, and plenty of local shops can supply boards and wet suits if you want to catch these under-the-radar waves. Portsmouth, sharing a watery border with Maine, packs historic sites and inventive restaurants into a dense, salty seafarers’ city. The well-brined meats at Cure will fuel the next leg of the journey.

What to wear: RydrTM Flannel: With a classic design and subtle corduroy details, this workhorse plaid is as versatile as you are.

WHITE MOUNTAINS, NH

With proximity to Boston and New York and their vacationing swells of yore, New Hampshire is one of the places where Americans “invented” getting out into nature. The White Mountains run deep with outdoorsy heritage. A stop in picturesque Jackson puts a traveler at a hub of trails and vistas, from easy-going Black Cap to the burly Tuckerman Ravine route up storied Mount Washington, which lives up to its reputation as one of New England’s most scenic, and fearsome, mountains. New Hampshire is essentially a sea of trees—a fall-color kaleidoscope.

What to wear: Radikl Outsider® Pant, the lightweight ripstop fabric delivers rugged wind and water resistance while still offering the comfort and breathability of cotton.

WATERBURY, VT

Green Mountain State woodsiness is at its peak in Little River State Park, a fascinating site with layers of natural history and local heritage—if you can make a reservation for one of the handful of cozy cabins, this spot is worth a stop-over for hikes, paddles and contemplation. Just a few miles down the road in town, Hen of the Wood stakes a claim as one of the farm-to-table pioneers.

What to wear: MaverickTM Jacket, featuring a rugged, water-resistant canvas exterior and a cozy fleece lining.

BURLINGTON, VT

Wildsam

The metropolis of Vermont (relatively speaking!) is dense with craft breweries, outdoor outfitters and pure hangout spots. The 14-mile Greenway along Lake Champlain is, in its way, the key to the city—the best place to raise your heartrate, do some people-watching, and keep an eye on the water for the mysterious Champ. (You probably won’t see him/it, but you never know.) When time comes to trade nature for culture, the South End is home to an array of makers.

What to wear: InvigorartrTM Crew, featuring merino wool, the perfect layer for cool-weather activities.
