Here’s to the icons. The Legends still living. The ones who make New Mexico what it is.

New Mexico isn’t a place that gives itself away all at once. Drive its roads. Learn that a green stretch of cottonwoods means there’s water nearby. Notice how the mountains change color before a storm. Stop when you see smoke rising from a chile roaster or a hand-painted sign pointing towards a studio.

People here have always known how to make something from what the land gives them. Pueblo potters still gather clay from the earth; acequias carry mountain water into fields and orchards. Artists weave wool into patterns handed down through generations. In kitchens across the state, chile is roasted, dried, ground, stewed and debated.

New Mexico has always made room for originals. Maria Martinez turned San Ildefonso clay into pottery recognized around the world. Aldo Leopold helped establish the Gila as the world’s first designated wilderness. Georgia O’Keeffe found endless possibility in the hills around Abiquiú. Fabiola Cabeza de Baca Gilbert drove rough roads to record the recipes, remedios and farming traditions of rural families. In Española, lowriders turned cars into an art form entirely their own.

You’ll want to slow down and pay attention. Art, food, land and history aren’t separate here; they’re tangled up like a root system. Witness how old ways are regarded and repaired, reinvented and passed along. Notice how the extraordinary and the everyday have never been very far apart: An old adobe church unlocked in the middle of the day. A smoking horno. Fresh sopaipillas and honey. Neon flickering on in Tucumcari. A roadside stand strung with red ristras. The strange quiet of dunelands.

So ask questions. Eat what’s in season. Take the dirt road. Buy from the person who made it. Stay outside until the light is gone and the stars shine over these lands of enchantment.
