LOCAL BRANDS
Sun Valley fosters an abundance of makers and craftsman, from adventure vehicle-builders to base layer designers. Below, learn about a few favorites.
WILD RYE
In 2016, Cassie Abel started Wild Rye as a means of creating technical and deeply functional mountain apparel for women—a vision of clothing for adventurers designed with fit, performance, style and comfort top of mind. Developed and tested in the mountains of Sun Valley—and women-led and women-run—Wild Rye outfits outdoorswomen in Idaho and far beyond.
FIRST LITE
Founders Kenton Carruth and Scott Robinson needed merino layers in effective camouflage colors that would work across the many conditions of Idaho’s mountains and rivers. Now, First Lite produces high-quality apparel for the most extreme conditions. The Hailey flagship store is a local staple for hunters, packed to the brim with gear and wisdom for getting out in Idaho's wild places.
DECKED
Lance Meller and Jake Peters designed the ultimate toolbox, tackle box, and tool organizer for Sun Valley adventure, for pickup truck or full-size vans. Today, they're making the second generation of their original truck drawers along with a thoughtful range of accessories to create an ecosystem of organizational nirvana for any pickup truck owner on all kinds of adventures.
LAMSON
Waterworks—now Lamson—was formed in 1996 when fishermen who happened to be product designers figured a better way to release a fly-caught fish. Their solution was an innovative tool that allowed a fish to be released without handling, and the fly to remain intact. Named after their hometown in Idaho, they called the tool the Ketchum Release. The designers wondered what the perfect fly reel would look like; the results of this early ideating formed the basis of an enduring, innovative reel architecture.
CLUB RIDE
Mike Herlinger founded Club Ride between working at an outdoor store and racing bikes on the weekend. His vision was to create irreverent, technical mountain lifestyle clothing that spoke to mountain bikers, hikers, raft guides, and ski bums creating their own opportunities in mountain towns. It's bike lifestyle clothing that celebrates all outdoor pursuits.
REFLEX
In 1979, four friends and die-hard skiers set out to make the world’s best ski poles in the original American ski town. Reflex was born in Sun Valley, Idaho, started by Gus Verge, Roger Roche, Lou Krieger and Dick Marshall, and together, they sent Reflex to the top of the market throughout the 80s and 90s. Revived in 2020, the goal remains the same: to make the best ski pole out there.
NOMADIC VANS
Founded upon a passion for the outdoors—and a love for rugged vehicles capable of getting to hard-to-reach locations—Nomadic’s creators, Ron Arnold and Gardner Cord, started their journey over a post-ski beer at Grumpy’s, where they bonded over their shared love for adventure and automotive history in their blood. Now they are the leading Mitsubishi Delica dealership and repair facility in the U.S., and lead a dedicated team of mechanics, mountain athletes, and overlanding enthusiasts.
ROCKY MOUNTAIN HARDWARE
Rocky Mountain Hardware turns molten bronze into custom, precision hardware that transcends the ordinary. Mark and Patsy Nickum worked closely with architects, designers and builders in Sun Valley, furnishing high-end doors, windows and door hardware for upscale, custom-built homes. Whenever a need arose on a project for a particular type of hardware that just couldn’t be found, it was created—that was just the beginning. Today, the family tradition of crafting high-quality, elegant, custom bronze pieces continues with their son Christian at the helm.
